Scaling Sustainability: How Sirohi is Taking Indian Craftsmanship Global with BoxHero

“At Sirohi, our ethos revolves around crafting products that not only showcase impeccable design and quality but also have a story to tell,” emphasizes Sirohi Founder Gauri Malik in their organization's Impact Report 2023-2024.
Learn how the company weaves artistry with advocacy to uplift women from marginalized communities, and how BoxHero has helped them achieve their mission.

At the heart of Sirohi’s mission is empowering women artisans through craftsmanship. The brand specializes in high-quality, eco-friendly home decor, lifestyle, and gifting products that are handmade across five states in India. By leveraging their existing skills, Sirohi provides income opportunities to marginalized women, many of whom lack formal education, while promoting sustainability through the use of locally sourced waste and salvaged materials.
Founder Gauri Malik and Marketing & Brand Partnerships Lead Aakanksha Arora sat with us to share Sirohi’s journey—from their inception to their expansion—the challenges they faced in inventory management and how they ultimately found BoxHero to keep track of their stock.
The Background: Transforming Lives Through Art
In 2012, the Skilled Samaritan Foundation (SSF) visited Sirohi, a rural village in Haryana, India, to launch a solar lighting project. As they engaged with the local community for more than half a decade, SSF identified a significant opportunity gap: talented artisans with exceptional craftsmanship lacked access to modern skills and platforms to market their work.
This interaction they had with the communities sparked the creation of the Sirohi project. This project started by empowering women in and around Muzaffarnagar, a small town in northern India, which is also Gauri’s hometown.
Through SSF, artisans receive skill development, design training, and product creation support so they could produce high-quality products that generate revenue. These items are then brought to market through Sirohi, SSF’s social enterprise.

As the business continues to grow, more women from different regions have joined the initiative, gaining financial independence and employment opportunities. Over the past decade, SSF has supported over 2,500 livelihoods from five states in India, with more than 90% of them being women.
Sirohi takes pride in its best-in-class baskets, boxes, furniture, and lifestyle and decor pieces. These products are shipped worldwide through B2C, DTC, and B2B business models, bringing the beauty of Indian artistry to global consumers.
Recently, Sirohi expanded its home decor collection to include candle stands and organizers to further diversify its product offerings.
"We primarily focus on B2B," Aakanksha explained. "As Gauri mentioned, we partner with corporates and major retail stores both in India and globally to bring Indian handcrafted, sustainable, and luxury products—made by artisans—to global buyers."

Like many businesses, Sirohi started small, with a manageable number of SKUs that could be tracked manually. However, as the company grew and expanded its product range, keeping up with inventory became increasingly challenging.
Let’s take a closer look at how they tackled this issue.
Sirohi’s Growth Story: Working with BoxHero
Aakanksha shared that they initially managed their inventory using Excel files. However, as they added more products with different features, this method quickly became impractical.
Back in 2021, Sirohi managed 37 SKUs.
After partnering with more craft clusters, inventory management became increasingly complex. The team, often working directly on the ground to source new products and compile product information, found manual tracking both time-consuming and cumbersome.
"We realized that as we were scaling and introducing more SKUs, we needed software that could consolidate our inventory, provide clear data on stock levels, and present a true picture of our inventory."
That’s when Gauri took matters into her own hands. She went to the App Store, searched for inventory management apps, and discovered BoxHero. She was immediately drawn to its simple design, knowing it was the right fit for their growing business.

All you had to do was take a photo of the product, enter the dimensions and details, and it was recorded," Gauri shared.
Q: What led you to choose BoxHero over the other inventory management apps?
A: We could create different fields to track various aspects of each product, such as multiple raw materials, different colors, or other attributes.
But what really stood out was the ease of use. Anyone with a phone could just snap a photo on the ground, input the details quickly, and it was done! No more gathering piles of products and manually entering data into Excel.
That’s exactly why we’ve been using BoxHero for over three years now!

The Benefits of Centralized Data for Sirohi
Beyond its intuitive and user-friendly interface, two key factors have made BoxHero an essential tool for Sirohi: data centralization and real-time tracking.
For Gauri, having all inventory data on a single, centralized platform has made a significant difference. “Our sales and marketing teams could know how much stock we have. Before, we had to manually count the stock in our stock room,” she explained.

Additionally, BoxHero’s real-time tracking capabilities allow Sirohi to map each product back to the artisan who created it. This level of detail is especially valuable when collaborating with sponsors and funders.
“The fact that we have all this data is significant. I think we're one of the few organizations across the craft ecosystem that has been able to map our data so effectively. It helps us communicate with our funders and showcase our impact.”
Gauri reiterated that BoxHero has served her very well as a solo founder, especially in the early days when Sirohi had no dedicated production team.
"It was just me, trying to figure out how to aggregate all our data," she recalled. “And I think from that very small team of four people to 22 people today, it’s only helped us strengthen our data, and it’s come a long way,” she reflected.

For Gauri, BoxHero’s straightforward design and ability to bring all the product data together made it an affordable yet powerful tool. Sirohi has come a long way, growing from a small number of SKUs to managing over 350 on their website.
As they continue to expand, the Sirohi’s team hopes to make the most of BoxHero’s features and look forward to seeing what new tools and updates will be available in the future.
